UWNCM and the Early Literacy Innovation Zone of North Central Massachusetts helped young students stay engaged with learning over winter break with the Innovation Zone Winter Reading Challenge.

The challenge ran from December 20 to January 20 and tasked students from Pre-K to 3rd grade with reading for 15 minutes a day on the Footsteps2Brilliance® app.

Each day, students could choose to read a book, write a story or play an educational game. Every student who completed the challenge earned a certificate, and the top three readers received a Kindle Fire Tablet courtesy UWNCM.

“This reading challenge propelled young readers on new adventures, helped them learn about the world around them and so much more. We were thrilled that so many students from the region took part in it,” says Judy Tomlinson, Director of Community Impact at UWNCM.

Footsteps2Brilliance® is an award-winning English and Spanish literacy app that helps children develop essential early literacy skills. It seeks to level the playing field by providing resources for children who may have fewer opportunities to learn at home.

Through the Early Literacy Innovation Zone, supported by partners including UWNCM, Foot-steps2Brilliance® is available for free to all schools and families in participating school districts.

Since 2018, children in North Central Massachusetts have spent over 55,000 hours on Footsteps2Brilliance®, reading over 183,000,000 words and gaining vital vocabulary acquisition, critical thinking and comprehension skills.
