FITCHBURG, MA: September 24, 2019 - On Sunday evening, residents of Fitchburg experienced a devastating loss from a 3-alarm fire at the Bartley Nolan Condominiums on 7 Beekham Street. Several dozen individuals have been displaced from their homes.
Multiple organizations are working together to help affected residents. The American Red Cross provided immediate, short-term shelter assistance and The Salvation Army – Montachusett Corps has established a relief hub at their Water Street location as a central site to provide immediate needs assistance. Representatives from state and local agencies including Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Transitional Assistance will also be meeting later this week to discuss coordinated assistance for immediate and on-going relief efforts.
The United Way of North Central Massachusetts (UWNCM) is making a $15,000 grant to The Salvation Army to facilitate the timely response of assistance efforts and help victims rebuild their lives. The grant will provide victims with a range of assistance including basic needs, relocation support, and other necessities.
We are appealing to the community to join our efforts by donating to a special fund called the Fitchburg Fire Relief Fund to support those impacted by the fire. Donations can be made by texting FFRF to 50155
One hundred percent of donations will be directed to relief assistance for victims of the fire through coordinated efforts with The Salvation Army and other agencies that may provide additional services.
“Our hearts go out to the victims of this fire. We know people are struggling and believe the most effective way to help is by providing this assistance and creating a fund to allow members of community to help these people rebuild their lives,” says UWNCM President Kory Eng.
For questions regarding donations, please contact Jody Athanasiou, Director of Resource Development, at Jody@uwncm.org or 978-345-1577, Ext. 306. For those requiring assistance, please contact the Salvation Army. Please be aware that coordinated efforts to assess the need for, and to collect other types of donations such as clothing, furniture, etc., have not yet been identified. UWNCM will make every effort to make this information available as it released.
