United Way Combat Hunger Initiative
United Way of North Central Massachusetts Strategy
In North Central Massachusetts, we LIVE UNITED against hunger…. through
United Way Combat Hunger Initiative, with its goal to ensure that:
Children and families don’t go hungry, so they can focus on becoming self sufficient.
- Too many children in North Central Massachusetts are ‘food-insecure,’ meaning that they don’t know where their next meal is coming from.
- 1 in 6 children are ‘food-insecure.’ It is estimated that over 5,000 children in North Central Massachusetts are hungry.
Our strategy for HEALTHY COMMUNITIES includes:
A staggering 49 million in America, including 1 in 5 or 6 children, are food-insecure. 37% of young families in our country live below the poverty line (the highest level on record). In our community, over 5,000 children are food-insecure. We have local food banks and local food pantries and schools that would like more meals than we can produce.
Through our innovative initiative, United Way Combat Hunger ‘Heroes Against Hunger,’ thousands of families don’t have to worry about their next meal, so they can focus on becoming self sufficient. Through our partnership with Outreach Inc., we are able to package a meal that will feed a family of four for $1.36. And best of all, they taste great and are healthy.
Since we launched this initiative, over 600,000 meals have been packaged thanks to our donors and volunteers. For our community to thrive, everyone needs food security. It is critical—especially for children—to have healthy and nutritious meals so they can learn, grow and be successful.
