Providing Emergency Relief for those Left in the Cold

The United Way recently made two grants through our Supplemental Basic Needs Initiative that will help community members in North Central Massachusetts stay safe and warm this winter.

One grant will enable NorthStar Family Services in Leominster to cover heating oil costs for local families who cannot afford to heat their homes during the cold winter months.

The second grant will help the Athol Area YMCA turn an unused space into a room that will provide shelter and a bed for homeless individuals when the United Way’s Emergency Shelter Fund (ESF) has been activated.

The Supplemental Basic Needs Initiative funds programs that address people’s immediate needs during a time of crisis. The ESF is part of this initiative and provides lodging during extreme weather conditions. In the 2018-2019 fiscal year, the Supplemental Basic Needs initiative provided funding for heat and utilities for 600 individuals and families and 35 nights of lodging for 52 people.

If you’d like to help us continue providing emergency relief to those in need in our community, now is a great time to make your gift.

December 3rd is a nationally known event called Giving Tuesday. This year we are #GivingWarmth to those who struggle to stay warm this season. Help us reach our goal of $5,000 by texting GIVINGWARMTH to 50155.
